We would like to invite and welcome everyone to join virtually with our Indiana County KTC for a First Light Offering for World Peace celebration to be held Friday, January 1, 2021 at 10:00 am.
First Light is a special day initiated by our parent monastery KTD that began on January 1, 2000. Since then, First Light has been held on January 1st at KTD and KTCs all around the world. Through the centuries light has been a powerful symbol and substance. Light creates warmth and connection. Light inspires hope, love, and life. Buddha Shakyamuni said in the Sutra on Offering Lamps (light):
These are the results of offering lamps:
You will not lose consciousness at death.
You will illuminate all directions.
You will see fine things never before seen.
You will definitely be reborn in a higher state
And take your seat among the enlightened beings.
Part of His Holiness the Karmapa's activity is to point the way to living a life of love and compassion, to teach us to protect our environment, and to provide the light of wisdom. Light offerings have special meaning in this regard: shining the light on our inner wisdom and reminding us of the clear path to living each day to create a life of peace.
This year we will gather to hold a First Light Celebration, a ceremony which will include the Chenrezig and Amitaba practice which promotes compassion, longevity, and rebirth in Dewachen. The First Light Celebration will end with a light offering ceremony dedicated to those we may wish to remember who have passed away, those who are ill, all beings who suffer, and dispersing the light of wisdom to all corners of the world in the New Year.
The Chenrezig/Amitaba practice is a chanted meditation practice. A PDF of the text and a Zoom link will be provided in the KTC weekly Email Schedule or upon request at firstname.lastname@example.org. We invite you to light candles at your home to remember loved ones, to honor of special occasions, and to promote world peace.
